Hello September (Achoo!)

I was thrilled on Tuesday to be reminded at Starbucks that it was finally September by the annual reappearance of the Pumpkin Cream Cheese muffins and the Pumpkin Spice Lattes. I love the changing of the decorations at Starbucks - especially the fall items because it reminds me that it won't be hot forever and there are usually fun Halloween things.
On Wednesday I woke up with a sore throat and remembered that I am allergic to September in Austin. I always got sick during football season when we were driving back and forth and back then I thought it was because my body couldn't get used to the clean air of Austin and the stinky Baytown and Pasadena refinery filled air. Turns out that refinery filled air in "Stinkadena" was much easier for me to breathe...this clean hill country air is killing me!!!!
Add to that the fact that Hank has decided all at once that he is part doberman, part pit bull and part police dog and that it is his duty to stay up all night growling at every single twig that snaps outdoors and then running every 20 minutes to the back door to bark ...and the combination of a stopped up head and not much sleep has left me pretty grumpy. I am trying to remedy the situation and am on my third repeat of You've Got Mail for the day. It's hard to be in a bad mood with Joe Fox looking down at me from the TV.

We have so much going on in September! The two classes for Amy Singer are filling up quickly so be sure and call or come in and sign up! And if you have evermade anything from Knitty (and of course you have!!) bring it in for our Knitty Display and show it off! I think Amy will love seeing the different interpretations of patterns and we need to make sure she knows we love knitty.com!! Also. don't forget that we will be having a little anniversary celebration on Sunday the 12th - if you play an instrument bring it up here! Amy wants to have a little sing-a-long and she is bringing her ukulele!

BACK TO SCHOOL!
Last spring we helped Bedichek Junior School put on an afterschool program where kids learned to knit. About 18 kids learned to knit and they spent the semester knitting squares to make baby blankets for St. David's Hospital. We are going to continue to help with this program but they need people to help. Actual hands to show these kids how to cast on, how to knit and how to cast off!
They are meeting on Thursday afternoons from 4 to 6 - if you can spare even a couple of Thursdays here at the beginning they would really appreciate it. It's really hard to teach 18 kids to knit all by yourself! See me and I will help you get in touch with their volunteer coordinator.

I have also volunteered to donate a basket of handknitted items for animals for the Central Texas SPCA Silent Auction in November - there are lots of patterns for simple toys on Ravelry if you would like to help. There is an especally cool pattern called FETCH that I made in just over an hour that is for a bone - you can make it out of cotton yarn or make it out of wool and felt it.
Fetch
(Here's the one I made for Hank - he doesn't care that it's pink!)
I also have some patterns for some really simple mice that are perfect for yarn scraps. I also have the stuffing, the squeakers and the catnip for filling the toys and will be happy to felt anything if you would like to do the knitting part and let me finish it off. I think it would really be awesome if we presented a super cool basket jam-packed full of goodies to represent all of my cool customers who love animals. Anyone out there who would like to knit a few really simple dog sweaters? I will be happy to supply the yarn AND the pattern!!

OK, Back to work...
